The Forgotten People

Current problems affecting peoples of the world are found every day when turning on the television. Many people know certain situations that exist for particular people, but the one “group” that is always forgotten are the American Indians. There are many issues that they battle in 2019. Surprise. I know CNN does not say a word. These problems are life and death. No one cares about Native Americans. Not even some Native Americans do. I am a Cherokee, and I learn more and more about my people. Issues that I have never heard of when I turn on my television. I know about everyone else’s problems. I am so glad I know about my people’s.
Native Americans are the race that no one speaks of. The hidden shadow in everyday life that people do not notice. If you are an Indian, that’s just another way of saying “We should have got them all” to the White race. It is despicable the way the Europeans have treated the Native Americans. Many of the problems that Native Americans have are a direct result of European treatment toward Native Americans. There was a policy of “Save the Man, Kill the Indian” in the United States at one time in history. It is still supported. It is not considered murder. European Americans “reasoned that we were inferior beings who needed to learn the “right way.” So white men on horses stampeding through the USA was not uncommon. These people were out to kill. Millions they murdered. But you know we aren’t even people remember??
So all of the issues that I have learned about are quite alarming, but I can not say every one of them is a surprise. I would say most of the problems have everything to do with living with the European race and the effects of “that.” The two races are too different. So many issues came to the poor Indians. The reality of Native Americans is their spirit is so strong, and they have endured so much. It seems like the more we are given it slides right off our back. But like anyone else, Natives are HUMAN BEINGS and not perfect.
I came across so much about my people. Some of the issues are massively high incarceration rates. Our jail rates are incredibly high in comparison to our Native American population. I do not think a lot of people know that. Some automatically due to biases believe African Americans have the highest percent. That is a massive issue and one that is alarming. A problem that I experienced firsthand is called assimilation. “Beat the Indian out of the Indian” was the American motto. “Kill the Indian, Save the Man” was another.
