Comfort of Culture

Humans inherently have needs. Of course, the primary two needs of humans are water and food as these are the most essential things to life. However, humans also need a third thing which is shelter. In turn, humans have an innate need for comfort. There are many different ways that we find comfort. Not only is comfort having a roof over one’s head and a comfortable place to sit down and relax after the days work and chores, but comfort is also having a place or group of people where one is accepted and understood. Regardless of how big or small that group is, it is something that people spend their entire lives seeking out.

Unfortunately, though, this is not always a good thing. People can very easily get caught up in this state of comfort, ultimately preventing them from growing as a person and as a member of society. For example, present day America suffers greatly as a result of this phenomenon. America is a deeply polarized nation politically, socially, and economically. Much of this polarization has come from people’s unwillingness to stray too far from their comfort group, and in turn, from their ideology. Social media has further exacerbated this issue as people are able to choose what information they receive, causing an echo chamber effect that prevents them from ever understanding the experience of those who do not subscribe to the same ideology. This problem has been extremely detrimental for the United States, slowing progress in almost all facets of society.

Thus, cultural immersion is likely the most beneficial solution. Regardless of nationality, race, creed, socioeconomic status, or ideology, every person is a human first. Therefore, when immersing oneself into another culture or circle, one will find that they have much more in common with people outside of their culture, family, or overall comfort group. Each person has those same primary needs being food, water, and shelter, as well as a general desire to be happy and content. The only real thing getting in the way then is not even ideology but rather is ignorance. If people opened themselves up to ideas and lifestyles different from their own, the country and even the world would be a much better, happier place as society could come much closer to universal understanding. So, get out of your comfort zone, meet people different from you, and learn the culture of humanity.
