Possible Sects of a Modern Day Secret Society of the Illuminati

The Illuminati and other secret societies come and go with the sands of time. There have been a several new groups taking the name Illuminati lately. Depending on which version of the myth you believe, they are either pure evil and want to take over the world, or they are completely altruistic, looking to establish equal rights and justice worldwide.

Either way, the original Bavarian Illuminati has been officially dead for a couple hundred years. Any group that calls themselves Illuminati these days is borrowing the name with no connection to the Bavarian Illuminati of the 1700s.

The modern day resurrection of the idea of a secret society called the Illuminati is due largely in part to the cult-hit Illuminatus! Trilogy books by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson published in 1975. There’s even the possibility that Trilogy will become a TV series soon, showing the lasting influence of the series some 50 years later.

There are at least 20 groups trying to pass themselves off as “THE” Illuminati. Perhaps some of them even deserve the moniker. But most are probably just scam artists looking to capitalize on the popularity of the word. Their websites come in several varieties: joinilluminationline.org, illuminatiofficialusa.co.za, illuminatisite.com, illuminatibavarian.org and joinilluminatitemple.com.

Being a (non-existent?) secret society makes it difficult to determine their agenda. I’ve listed several potential motivations of the group as I’ve discovered over the past few decades. Since it is supposedly a secret society, they don’t necessarily have to go by the word “Illuminati.”

One possibility is that the Illuminati are groups of people that everyday Joe’s just don’t understand then accuse of nefarious behaviors, like research doctors in the pharmaceutical industry or people that work in the importing/exporting business. They come together to share their genius and altruistically advance mankind.
