SAMSA Wits Chapter took Wits Medical School by storm, hosting the first ever Mental Health Awareness Week! Partnering with faculty, SADAG, various societies on campus and even the Medical Students’ Council, we managed to pull off one of the most unforgettable week-long events the campus has ever seen!
Spanning from the 30th of July to the 2nd August, we began the week handing out green wristbands (green being the colour of mental health) at the entrance of medical school to everyone who approached and were willing to receive. These wristbands had the local faculty helpline available to students who seek support printed on them. During this time we also advertised the events we would be hosting throughout the week with themed sessions that would tackle the issues of suicide, depression and many more. At end the week, we had a showcase of pieces which people would come and perform, from spoken word to musical performances and it was well received by the Health Sciences Campus.
We’re thankful for the positive reviews received campus wide and are looking forward to continuing to raise awareness of Mental health in our faculty and beyond!
