Great Guidance for Our Time from a Not So Simple Nursery Rhyme

Educators will tell you that nursery rhymes are vital for cognitive development, the learning of language, rhythm, and rhyming. But, what of the value of spiritual cognitive development? Nursery rhymes are deceivingly simple on the surface. Yet, metaphorically speaking, if you read between the lines, they offer wisdom and an opening for self-reflection.

What isn’t immediately evident in the rhyme is the metaphysical concept of death/rebirth and transformation. And I’m not talking about actual physical death here, I am talking about change and the opportunity that the perceived “end” of something brings. And, incidentally the very real concept of “change or die” whether applied to an individual, a business, a country, or the planet. I am sure you see where I am going with this and what is inferred.

The last two years have given many people, despite what have been fearful and tragic circumstances, the opportunity to pause and look within; an opportunity for deeper self-reflection, and perhaps the discovery of deeper meaning and purpose and transformation. Some took that opportunity and brought about personal change, some did not but rather worked quickly to restore things to the way they were pre-pandemic. Some in the absence of a wall sat on the fence.

So, while in the end, Humpty wasn’t even a shell of their former self, they had transformed. And, thanks to Humpty’s personal sacrifice some valuable lessons were left behind. Let’s crack the code (forgive me Humpty). In this short series, Humpty will be perceived as three different identities:
