2000 miles Road Trip With Tesla Model Y!

It has been almost a year since me and my wife have owned our Model Y and boy! it has been a wonderful experience so far. Almost in a year, we have been to do quite a few short road trips near Chicago and one big trip (From Chicago to Virginia). At the beginning of this year I got a job at Microsoft and being fed up of Chicago winters, I wanted to move to Seattle, WA(I know I know.. the rains :D) to explore the Pacific North West Terrain. As the opportunity came along, I spoke with my wife and we decided to drive all the way to Seattle.

The route that we planned to follow was to be completed in 5 days starting from Chicago, IL(duh obviously) → Wisconsin →South Dakota → Montana → Washington.

From Chicago, we started with a full charge (we have the long range which gives 325 miles on full charge) and it was a 160 mile drive to our hotel at Middleton (Approx. 3 hours) and by the time we reached we had 120 miles left on the battery(this is with the heater and music being on for the whole trip).

Very next day, we decided to leave early morning for Sioux falls, South Dakota. We used A Better Route Planner app (ABRP) for planning the route (I prefer using this as it plans the route with stops every 1.5 -2 hours, which helps me relax and stretch a bit) . We made 3 supercharging stops and spent a total of $35 in supercharging (supercharging added approx. 40 min to whole trip). First super charging stop was in WI and the rest 2 were in Minnesota. Each supercharger had food courts (What else do you need, right? ;D) and things to do around it. With a gas car one could have probably completed the trip in around 6 hours but with Tesla it took us approx. 7 hours(Totally worth the experience!). At the end of the trip we reached Sioux falls with 60 miles of juice left and plugged our bad boy in a destination charger. All the hotels, we stayed at, had destination chargers at the place which helped us a ton in saving time and money in the trip (destination chargers usually are free and almost every major hotel chains have a few these days)

Next day, we started for Deadwood, Montana with Mt Rushmore as intermediary stop (around 450 mi trip) with the full juice again. Drive to Montana was the most beautiful drive in this trip(highly recommend visiting Montana). We made two supercharging stops in SD, spent a total of $48 for this leg. We stayed at The Lodge at Deadwood, which also had destination chargers. We arrived at The Lodge with 60–70 miles of juice left. This is driving at 80–90 mph with air conditioning and music on all the time.

After this, comes the last phase of our trip from Montana to the state of Washington. Since, this was a really long trip (Around 1000 miles), we decided to make stops at Bozeman, MT and Spokane, WA. We spent a total of $100 on supercharging the car and on driving time it added approx. total 2 hours of extra time. We reached our final destination Bellevue, WA with 120 miles of spare juice!

For the whole trip, we spent around $180 in charging for a 2000 miles road trip! and the car gave around 60–70% efficiency (this is us driving around 80–90 mph average speed with ac and music on).

I am very glad we decided to do this trip as it raised our confidence in Model Y itself and driving this car is an absolute pleasure! If you have been thinking about buying this car and had reservations about long road trips, I hope this blog could be helpful for you! For the car itself, I would say go ahead and test drive it a couple times and you won’t regret it!
