Git Common Commands

1. git init Initialize a git repository. Can be issued in any folder, empty or otherwise.

2. git status Find status of repository. Eg: any unstaged files, any uncommitted files

3. git add <file> Stage a file before committing it. <file> can be wildcards.

4. git commit Commit a staged file. Can use -m "Commit message" to write a commit message inline

5. git log View the log of a git repository. Displays all commits all users have made in the repository. Can use --oneline to display commit message one liners.

6. git remote To do any thing about remote repositories for uploading code.

7. git remote add <name> <url> Add a new remote with specified name present on URL.

8. git push <name of remote> <branch> Push all commits from branch to remote with specified name. Can use -u flag to remember parameters.

9. git pull <remote name> <branch> Pull any changes made to remote on the specified branch.

10. git diff <file> View differences between current file and previously committed same file. Can use HEAD in place of <file> to view changes in all files.

11. git reset <file> Unstage a specified file from staging area

12. git checkout <branch> [<file>] Checks out the specified branch. Can be used with -- for <branch> and with a <file> option to checkout last commit for file.

13. git rm <file> Unstages staged file .Can be used with wildcards to remove all files or all files of certain type.

14. git merge <branch> Merges current branch with branch

15. git branch View all branches for a git repository. Can use -d <branch> to delete a branch.
