Finding the right career in Tech

Going through tweets, Instagram and LinkedIn comments, I realized the most frequently asked question is knowing the right career in tech.

Not to sound cliche but “tech is the new oil”.

It’s so amazing seeing people transit from their various professional fields to tech. However, they are also confused about the right niche to pick in tech.

The diversity in tech is for people to pick where is suitable for them but interestingly it confuses them.

Looking at it from a designer perspective, I’ll say having too many options confuses people and this is evident in the questions bouncing around about how to pick the right career in tech.

I didn’t have it all figured out as well. I was into digital marketing, content writing, graphics design and academic research, that’s a lot, and I was about to transition into tech. If confusion is human, it would be me. I was close to having a panic attack.

Luckily, I was in an environment that could help me. I’ll be sharing how I picked my niche and my growth. This is where it gets interesting.

Heaven knows tech is the booming thing, come on, who doesn’t love money? I sure do.

It is a valid reason but it is not enough. Tech is beyond the money. I understood that I’m getting into tech because I love how tech solves problems. I was in a tech environment and all I do is create content and update their social media pages.

I wasn’t interested in their activities until I understood the whole concept and started seeing it in a new light.

I was intrigued by how web developers put one or two things via WordPress to create a website; the software engineers input their codes for web applications.

What about creative designers? They visualize digital products and all these were solving people’s problems. This was my motivation. I’ve been oblivious all this while.

This is where you ask yourself what motivates you because honestly, it is the foundation to finding the right career in tech.

If you’re like me, you are probably shying away from this question, especially when doing a lot.

This is about you so you have to think carefully about your interests.

What interests you? What are you good at? Are they transferable skills that align with tech skills?

I love creating content and carrying out research and as a social media manager I needed to know how to design my content, hence, I learned how to use CorelDraw and Photoshop.

These are skills that are needed in tech. I’m putting my research and writing skills into Technical writing and my design skills into UX design (in view).

Find something that you love doing, something that excites you. Do you have organisational skills? Then, you might need to look into Project Management. How about analytical skills? Do data/statistics excite you? Check Business and Data Analysis.

You just said we should think of what interests us and now you are saying we should think of what we don’t want. Shocker right? I know, I know. It’s simple really.

Knowing what you don’t want to do helps you streamline your choice in tech careers.

I knew I wasn’t interested in coding and I didn’t consider it. My interest might move there one day but for now, it’s not in that direction.

You don’t want to create designs? Easy. You cross off design-related tech careers and focus on tech careers that are not design related.

See, you can’t go wrong with research. Research opens you to knowledge and opportunities. You can’t transit to tech without knowing the nitty-gritty of tech.

Research every available in-demand tech skill based on the location of your choice. Check out their requirements and see if you can meet those requirements.

By now, you should start implementing these tips. Finding the right career in tech won’t be an issue if you follow these procedures.

Solving a problem is fulfilling and this is my reason for joining tech. Writing content to help ease people’s transition to tech is a delight for me. Remember interest? Understand what is best for you and what is not. Your interest will keep you going even when you don’t want to. Find that interest.
