This is Why People Laugh at Me When I Workout

And here’s why I don’t mind

Imagine you walk into the gym at work, ready to begin your workout. You immediately feel the eyes of your co-workers staring at you. You’re uncomfortable. You think to yourself, “What are they looking at?”

As you start your workout it hits you, they’re gawking at you because you’re not wearing any gym shorts.

This happened to me. Multiple times.

Am I growing senile and just plain forgetting to dress myself? Am I some sort of weird exhibitionist? Am I trying to get myself fired?

No, in fact I’m fully clothed when I work out.

I’m just not wearing the usual workout clothes.

I’m wearing my shirt and tie.

How many times have we heard the excuses “I don’t have the time to exercise, the gym is too far away, the gym’s too busy, I don’t like getting up so early to work out, after work I’m too tired.”

Well, I can’t use those excuses. I have a fitness center 30-seconds from my office door, right at work. Free weights, treadmills, machines, bikes, the whole bit. I have everything I need just steps away.

I work-out in my shirt and tie because that’s what I usually wear to work. I don’t work-out daily like this, but when I’m pressed for time and only have a few minutes this is exactly what I do.

Why? Because I realize I have no legitimate excuse for not working out regularly. It’s right there!

Sure, maybe I can’t get in a full 30–45 minutes, but 10 minutes is better than nothing. Yes, I’ll change clothes if I have time for a regular workout. But, if I don’t? Well shirt and tie it is.

This is where I usually get the funny looks. And yes, sometimes outright laughter.

I’m ok with that because 1) I know it’s all in good fun, 2) the looks and comments tell me this isn’t the norm, I kind of like that, and most of all 3) it’s good for my physical and mental health to stay active, even if just for a few…
